Aurora, our star of the show, is a petite fairy of a girl, and daughter to a duke from Austria. She finds herself in a mysterious land called Lemuria, enjoying the company of an agile little flame named Igniculus. Her adventures to defeat the Black Queen will take her through a host of mystic environs in search of answers and, more importantly, home.

The Black Queen has stolen the Sun, the Moon and the Stars. You play as Aurora, a young princess with a pure heart whose soul is brought to the kingdom of Lemuria. Embark on a quest to recapture the three sources of light, defeat the Black Queen and restore the kingdom of Lemuria.

Child of Light was unveiled by Ubisoft yesterday as the studio’s artful love-letter to turn-based JRPGs. Although it’s a digital game, it’s said to offer some ten hours of gameplay, and Ubisoft has said this challenges the preconception that all download games are smaller and worth less.

Speaking with OXM, creative director Patrick Plourde underlined Child of Lights unique appeal amid a sea of similar-looking prospects out there today.

“We have the opportunity to make something creative, he began. “And technically, the risk is not to take any risks.”

Plourde added, “You see some small games and say, you’re doing a cheap rip-off of some FPS, I’m going to play Call of Duty instead. But by going off on a different angle, the more different we are, it’s like OK – this is original, and it’s entertaining, and people are looking for that.”

Child of Light does look rather beautiful and is far removed from the shooter pack. If you mossed the initial reveal you can check out the trailer, a debut batch of screens and gameplay details here.

“There’s this perception that if it’s not on a disc or it doesn’t retail for 60 dollars, it’s not worth it,” Plourde concluded. “And that mentality is changing. For me Child of Light is as valuable is a 60 dollar game and it’s as long, it’s a long game – more than 10 hours, easily.”
