Grand Theft Auto: The Movie signed up at last?

... And it looks like it might actually be good

After Grand Theft Auto publishers Rockstar recently helped fund soccer hooligan Brit flick The Football Factory, it finally looks as if the movie rights to GTA have been picked up.

According to movie gossip site Ain't It Cool News, producer Michael DeLuca (who has worked on Blade, Rush Hour 2, Austin Powers 2 and Boogie Nights, among others) has acquired the rights to produce a film based on the massive-selling crime-'em-up series.

DeLuca is apparently known for going out of his way to support talented new directors - which at least suggests that, if he does end up producing GTA: The Movie, it might actually be halfway decent.

We spoke to Rockstar's UK office but, at the time of writing, they were unable to confirm whether the film rights for GTA have indeed been signed up. We'll let you know as soon as we hear any more on the story.

Rockstar denies Grand Theft Auto movie rights rumour

Rob Fahey 15:41 19/05/2004
Update: Publisher denies reports posted on popular movie news website

Since the publication of this article, Rockstar has responded with an emphatic denial of the rumour that the Grand Theft Auto movie rights have been optioned.

"The rumor is completely false," Rockstar business development director Sean Macaluso told gi.biz. "Not only are the GTA film rights not for sale, but Mike Deluca no longer works for Dreamworks."

The original article is presented below in unedited form.

The rights to create a movie based on the immensely popular Grand Theft Auto videogame franchise have been picked up by a producer associated with film studio Dreamworks, according to reports appearing this week.

Popular Internet movie rumour website Ain't It Cool News has reported that Michael DeLuca, a Dreamworks producer who has also worked for New Line in the past, has picked up the rights to the series.

DeLuca's previous work includes producer roles on films including Blade, American History X, Magnolia, Blow and Boogie Nights, and he was ranked sixty-first in Premiere's 2003 "Power 100" list of movie industry movers and shakers.

Although his involvement in Grand Theft Auto is unconfirmed, it doesn't seem unlikely that the franchise - whose last two incarnations sold over 20 million units combined - has attracted the interest of major movie studios.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City actually included a large number of well-known movie stars on its voice cast - with the central character being played by Ray Liotta.
