De bekende regisseur John Woo blijkt al enige tijd een optie te hebben op de Metroid-franchise van Nintendo. Het doel? Een film erover maken...
De bekende regisseur John Woo, die onder meer bekend is door zijn films Mission Impossible II, The Killer en A Better Tomorrow, gaat een film over Metroid maken. Deze populaire franchise van Nintendo lijkt al langer aandacht van filmmakers te krijgen, maar nu heeft John Woo een interessante stap gezet.
Hij heeft namelijk een optie genomen op het regisseren van een film rond de gamereeks. Woo heeft al toegezegd de film te produceren, samen met zijn collega's Terence Chang en Brad Foxhoven. Het plan is de eerste film nog vóór 2006 uit te brengen.
De film draait om Samus Aran, de premiejaagster die in alle Metroid-spellen de hoofdrol speelt. Ze zal het, net als in de games, moeten opnemen tegen de Metroids en uiteindelijk zelfs tegen Mother Brain. De producers zeggen zelf het volgende over het project:
"Everyone involved is looking at this as a big-budget picture. We see a tremendous opportunity to launch a film franchise with Nintendo as a partner. We are very fortunate that there is such an extensive amount of material to draw upon for the film due to there being so many iterations of the game over the years. We have to assume the mainstream audience is unfamiliar with the property. As for the rest of the film, we will stay true to the game and have Samus battling the Metroids and Mother Brain in a fight for control of the galaxy. (...) Gaming is huge in both Europe and Japan and is starting to gain momentum in China, so we are not only going to see interest domestically but also on a worldwide basis for these films. These properties are really going mainstream. This type of story has a proven track record of success with film audiences."
