WILDSTAR WEDNESDAY - CROSSING THE STREAMS
By Akli "Youmukon" Amichi - 09 October, 2013

We've spoken previously about WildStar supporting cross-realm play, but up until now we haven't really delved into the details. As you are probably aware, we're planning on having many different realms (or "servers," as other games call them, though that's a bit of a misnomer these days) available to choose from at launch. There will be the usual rulesets of PvP, PvE, etc. but one of the most frustrating experiences is getting ready to play with your friends at launch only to discover they've rolled a character on a different server. So here's what we're doing to support cross-realm play throughout WildStar.

First and foremost, you can talk to anyone across time and space… well ok, maybe not time… but certainly across realms. To talk to anyone on another realm, all you have to do is include their realm name after an “at symbol” (@), so “/w CharacterName@RealmName Hello!” would allow you to speak to anyone online as if they were on the same realm as you.

The next thing you'd want to do with your friends is form a party with them. This works similarly to chat whispers: you simply invite someone using their name & realm (“CharacterName@RealmName”) and they will get a party invite notification that they can accept. All party chat is seen by everyone in the party, regardless of which realm they are on.

Next on the list of things you’ll want to do: Meet random strangers and kill stuff! Because nothing bonds people together like slaughtering the indigenous species of an alien planet. So we have a Group Finder that will match you based on various criteria with people from just about anywhere, and allow you to make new friends while exploring Nexus.

If for some reason you are anti-social and don’t want to meet people from strange new lands, we will be accommodating you as well. Most of our cross-realm features will have a checkbox to say that you only want to play with people from your own realm. By choosing this option, our system will only match you with people who are on your own realm, allowing for you to make friends who you'll be able to continue to play with after completing instanced content.

There are some limitations to our systems, however. We sadly can’t allow you to explore the world as a whole with your friends; as the world would quickly become too crowded. But anytime you enter instanced content, whether through battlegrounds, dungeons, arenas, or <REDACTED>, your entire party will all be able to play together. There is also a limitation on being able to trade items. Because we feel the economy on every realm is very important to maintaining the economic stability of the realm, you cannot trade with your friends from other realms.

Cross-realm gameplay is something that's been important to us from the very beginning, which is why getting that tech onto our servers was a priority early on. So feel free to pick your realm at launch without fear, knowing you'll be able to play with your friends wherever they end up. Thanks for reading!

A personal message from Troy "Aether" Hewitt | WildStar MMORPG
A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM TROY "AETHER" HEWITT
By Troy "Aether" Hewitt - 23 October, 2013

While I’ve been in the community building business (more years than I care to admit), I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the most innovative, creative, and talented people in the industry.

And while I’ve loved my prior jobs, and their resulting communities, I have to admit that what we’ve been able to build around WildStar is nothing short of incredible. Over the last five years, I’ve had one underlying philosophy that has defined everything we’ve done on the community front: Promote authenticity.

To me, that means honest dialogue without a spin. It means admitting when we’ve done something wrong, and clearly communicating what we are doing to address the issue. It’s meant engaging in forthright communications with the people that make up the WildStar community to identify the things that matter, and find ways for our team to discuss, understand, and adopt them without getting in the way of the conversation.

I’d like to believe that if you were to stack our developer interaction against any of the other game development companies out there, the Carbine team, from developer to artist to programmer, has connected with our community in a way that is unprecedented.

I’d like to say this was a difficult process, but when you work with a team that genuinely loves what they do, it’s pretty easy to coax them into connecting with our fans. In many cases, it’s more challenging to keep them from oversharing. I’m looking at you Jeremy Gaffney and Mike Donatelli. :-)

I’ve also had the opportunity to hire some of the most talented professionals in the business of building community. Atreid and Scooter love doing this as much as I do, and their talents and abilities have allowed us to build a passionate core community that has experienced firsthand our commitment to listening.

And wow, what a community we have built. We’ve got fansites with true passion, working and collaborating together to allow everyone to feel inclusive, and you have all done a fantastic job for us on so many levels, that it would take me another 500 words to describe how much it has meant to me to work alongside you. You’ve been true heroes, supporting us far beyond creating beautiful websites and writing new and exciting takes on the WildStar information we’ve shared. You’ve even gone so far as to help us manage the crowds on the show floor at gamescom, PAX, and Comic-Con, educating new fans about WildStar, and just generally being superlative human beings.

So it’s with no small amount of heartbreak that I announce that I’m leaving Carbine. Without going into too much detail, recent tragedies in my family require that I return home to be closer to my family. It was a decision I can only define as agonizing, but in the end, my family needs me.

Please understand: I love this team and I believe that WildStar is going to be blockbuster game. I’ve spent five amazing years learning more than I could have ever expected from all angles of the business of making games. It’s an experience I’ll remember and value forever, working with people that have become more than coworkers, but lifetime friends. I will miss them terribly.

The good news is that I leave you in capable hands, with Loic and David in North America, and Melanie, Mark, Jan and Akli holding down the fort for Europe, your community team will be working even harder to build a connected and engaged community like none other.

Add to that the talents of three forever friends of mine and industry leaders in their craft, and you have a powerhouse of a communications team that will make sure there isn’t a person on this earth (and beyond?) that hasn’t fallen in love with WildStar. I’m of course talking about our new VP of Brand, Mona Hamilton, our Director of Interactive Marketing, Christophe Bahamed (who will be stepping in to lead our global community team), and our new PR Manager Michael Shelling ( a man I’ve had the privilege of working with many times throughout my career).

So while this is goodbye for now, I guarantee you that we’ll be playing WildStar together on launch day.

Thank you for all the laughs, the unending support and the inspiration. I can’t wait to see what you do in the coming months.

Until then, take care of my peeps, and enjoy, won’t you?

Winter (Beta) Is Coming | WildStar MMORPG
WINTER (BETA) IS COMING
By Mark "Anlath" Hulmes - 29 October, 2013

Exciting times are upon us here at Carbine. The team has had their heads down for the last few months powering through development of WildStar, and things are shaping up really nicely. The remaining months of 2013 are going to be really big for us, and we've got a ton of great things planned, so this week we thought we'd give you a little taste of what's in store for the WildStar community.

WILDSTAR LIVESTREAMS
So many of you have been asking when you can see more gameplay, more developers, more more more. A lucky few of you may have stumbled on our little livestream test we ran this past weekend. We've got a bit more work to do, but in the next few weeks you should expect to start seeing regular livestreams from the Carbine team. And we won't just be showing off stuff you've already seen: expect to see new content, new classes, new reveals, and lots of WildStar gameplay over the coming months on a regular basis. We'll chat with the developers YOU want to talk to, play the content YOU want to see, and answer all most of your questions live! Want to get involved? Follow our channel on Twitch and get notified whenever we go live.

For those who miss any live episodes, expect to see previous broadcasts up on Twitch and YouTube the following week to catch up on what you missed.

CLASS TIME
Probably the second-most common question we get asked these days is "When will we hear about those last two classes?" The answer, of course, is soon. But starting next week, we're going to be initiating one of our biggest info drops yet which will roll out over the rest of 2013.

Classes have changed, evolved, and progressed since we first revealed them, so before we get to the new classes we thought it'd be great to reintroduce the old ones in an informative way, and showcase each of the unique mechanics, strategies, and designs of WildStar's classes. Each reveal (or re-reveal) will be accompanied by new webpages, developer interviews, and livestreams to answer any questions you have about that class. All of these reveals and information drops will lead up to one big moment in December:

WINTER BETA
I'm sure most of you skipped down to this part after reading the article's title. Yes, we're just about ready to start up the Winter Beta for WildStar. We'll be inviting tons of people, new and old, to check out the changes to WildStar, give us feedback, and play through the content to make sure we're ready for launch in Spring 2014.

We'll be sending out a survey to all of our beta applicants in the next few weeks. Be sure to fill it out as accurately as possible if you want to increase your chances of getting invited. Haven't applied yet? Now's your chance if you want to be included in our Winter Beta!

WRAP-UP
We know the last few months have been a little rough for fans of WildStar. There hasn't been enough juicy info to dig through, and we've been leaving the devs alone to let them get their game systems in a beta-ready place. But guess what? Time's up, and now we go big. Get ready to be drowned in WildStar details from now through launch. What do you want to hear more about? Let us know through Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, WildStar fansites, and any other place you can think of. As you know by now, the Devs are listening!
