Kort gezegd, post hier alle nieuwtjes, nieuwe software, nieuwe beta's, interessante links die je tegenkwam op google,... die eigenlijk niet in een of ander post thuishoren, maar toch voor iedereen leuk/handig/interessant kunnen zijn.

En om te starten:

MacFuse brengt diverse bestandssystemen naar OS X
Google-werknemer Amit Singh heeft de eerste release van het programma MacFuse vrijgegeven. Dit stukje software maakt het mogelijk om diverse bestandssystemen, die reeds beschikbaar zijn voor Linux, ook onder Mac OS X te gebruiken.

MacFuse is afgeleid van het Linux-project Fuse. Fuse, een afkorting voor 'Filesystem in Userspace', is een Linux-kernelmodule die een kernelinterface biedt aan userspace-drivers voor bestandssystemen. Hierdoor is het mogelijk om drivers voor bestandssystemen te ontwikkelen zonder dat er programmacode hoeft te worden ontwikkeld die in de Linux-kernel wordt uitgevoerd. Ook is het mogelijk om andere programmeertalen dan C te gebruiken voor de bestandssysteemdriver. Zo is het bijvoorbeeld mogelijk om een bestandssysteemdriver te schrijven in de scripttaal Python.

MacFuse is een Mac OS X-port van het Linux-project die bestaat uit een kernel-extension voor het besturingssysteem, een programma om de Fuse-bestandssystemen te mounten en een aangepaste versie van de userspace programmabibliotheek en het SSHfs-bestandssysteem. Met de beschikbaarheid van de Mac-versie van Fuse krijgt het besturingssysteem theoretisch ook gelijk de beschikking over een groot aantal drivers voor diverse bestandssystemen. Enkele voorbeelden hiervan zijn het, reeds eerder genoemde, SSHfs, een netwerkbestandssysteem dat gebruik maakt van het SSH-protocol; FuseFTP, een virtueel bestandssysteem dat gebruikmaakt van het ftp-protocol en ZFS-on-fuse, een Fuse-driver voor het Zettabyte File System van Sun waarvoor in de komende Mac OS X-versie Leopard ook al standaard ondersteuning is ingebouwd. Een zeer interessante Fuse-driver is NTFS-3G, een driver voor het ntfs-bestandssysteem die ook de mogelijkheid biedt om naar dit bestandssysteem te schrijven. FlickrFS, GmailFS en PicasaFS zijn Fuse-bestandssystemen die het mogelijk maken om respectievelijk de webservices Flickr, Gmail en Picasa te benaderen zoals locale bestandssystemen. Het MacFuse-project wordt ondersteund door Google, maar wordt voornamelijk door Amit Singh ontwikkeld die hiervoor gebruik maakt van de mogelijkheid om als Google-werknemer 20 procent van de werktijd te besteden aan persoonlijke projecten.

Office 2008 voor Mac aangekondigd.

Tijdens de Macworld Conference & Expo 2007 heeft Microsofts Macintosh-afdeling aangekondigd dat er gewerkt wordt aan nieuwe versie van Office voor de Mac. De suite zal naar verwachting in de tweede helft van 2007 op de markt komen.

Office 2008, zoals het product genoemd is, bevat vele nieuwe features, maar de meest opvallende is de mogelijkheid om de software zowel op PowerPC- als x86-computers te draaien. De huidige versie van Office voor de Mac, Office 2004, heeft namelijk geen support aan boord voor Apples x86-producten. Verder is deze Office-editie voorzien van drie Mac-only features. Allereerst is er de Publishing Layout View, die gebruikt kan worden voor het opmaken van documenten als een nieuwsbrief, een flyer of een brochure. Ook hebben de ontwikkelaars zogenaamde Ledger Sheets toegevoegd aan Excel. Deze functionaliteit is bedoeld om veel voorkomende financiële taken te vereenvoudigen. De derde Mac-only feature is de My Day-applicatie, waarmee zonder het starten van Outlook-tegenhanger Entourage toch een overzicht gekregen kan worden van taken en kalenderitems.

Een van de meest in het oog springende nieuwe features in Office 2007 voor Windows is de Ribbon, die de gebruiker snellere toegang moet geven tot bepaalde functionaliteit. In Office 2008 zal de Ribbon niet aanwezig zijn, maar in plaats daarvan zal de Mac-versie van Office voorzien worden van Elements Gallery. Deze feature heeft een vergelijkbaar doel als de Ribbon in de Windows-editie van de officesuite, maar is zodanig uitgevoerd dat hij beter binnen de user interface van Mac-software past. Een onderdeel van de Elements Gallery is Document Parts, waarmee het toevoegen van bepaalde documentdelen, zoals een inhoudsopgave of een header, vereenvoudigd wordt. Tot slot zal Office 2008 de mogelijkheid krijgen documenten op te slaan in het Office Open XML-formaat, dat ook in Office 2007 aanwezig is. Office 2004 zal binnenkort ook support krijgen voor dit documentsformaat.

Amazon Duitsland verkoopt iPhone vanaf € 899

Op Amazon.de zijn de 4GB en 8GB modellen van de iPhone in de verkoop gegaan. Het 4 GB model kost 899 euro en het 8 GB model staat voor 999 euro op de site.
De prijzen zijn beduidend hoger dan de $499 en $599 die Apple in Amerika vraagt voor het toestel, wanneer er een 2-jarig abonnement bij Cingular bij gekocht wordt.

Dit kan er op duiden dat Amazon van plan is het toestel zonder abonnement en SIMlock vrij te verkopen.

De iPhone is echter nog niet leverbaar; Apple heeft aangekondigd dat het toestel in juni in de VS verkrijgbaar wordt en pas eind 2007 in Europa.

Het 8 GB model staat overigens bij Amazon op nummer één in de TOP 5 van best verkochte goederen.

Ultimate iPhone FAQs List, Part 2

Just got back home tonight after my week in San Francisco, and found ANOTHER several dozen questions about the iPhone waiting on this blog’s comments area!

I promise that this blog isn’t going to become “all iPhone, all the time”–but I’ve read through your comments and compiled this second list of Q’s and A’s.

First, though, a clarification on my earlier post…

“Will the browser offer Flash and Java?” –In my previous blog post, I said “No” (you’ll see why in a moment). But several of you have pointed out an interview published in the German magazine MacWelt, in which the browser IS said to offer Flash and Java.

So I’ve asked John Markoff, who audio-recorded our interview with Steve Jobs, to play back the relevant exchange for me. Here it is:

Markoff: “What about all those plugins that live within Safari now, like Flash or like Java or like JavaScript?”

Jobs: “Well, JavaScript’s built into the Phone. Sure.”

Markoff: “And what are you thinking about Flash and Java?”

Jobs: “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”

Markoff: “Flash?”

Jobs: “Well, you might see that.”

Markoff: “What about YouTube–”

Jobs: “Yeah, YouTube—of course. But you don’t need to have Flash to show YouTube. All you need to do is deal with YouTube. And plus, we could get ‘em to up their video resolution at the same time, by using h.264 instead of the old codec.”

So the DEFINITIVE answer now is: NO Java, MAYBE Flash.

Going on:

“Will we be able to assign ipod-playable songs to ringtones?” –John Markoff asked this during our interview, and Mr. Jobs said it’s not been decided yet.

“How does the iPhone charge?” –It comes with a white charging/syncing dock, just like an iPod.

“Also, are you SURE about the games? All the iPods run those special iPod games; wouldn’t you expect them to run those at least?” –Ooh, that’s a fantastic point. I explored the iPhone rather thoroughly during my time with it, and never saw any games. But it sure sounds logical that you’d at least get everything you get with a regular iPod!

“Another thing: what is the of OS X version? Is it close to Leopard, a mobile-Leopard?” –No. It’s not the entire Mac OS X, either, and of course the interface has been redesigned for phone use.

“The CALENDAR program, does it accept input on the phone, or is it just a dumb viewer of synced data from your mac, like the ipod is?” –Calendar program isn’t finished yet, but I did see an “add new event” icon on the placeholder graphic.

“Is there any wireless (Bluetooth or Wifi) syncing at all, for contacts and calendar?” –No.

“Is the SETTINGS menu working as of now, and what are some of the settings that you saw in there?” –Yes, it’s working! Some of the options I remember were: backlight timer; “show touch feedback” (a little dot appears on the screen every time you tap); airplane mode; ringtone. There were many pages of settings, though.

“How was call quality? Was this not available for testing?” –Yes, it was working fine. I called home with it. Sounded loud and clear, although this means nothing at this point. Apple doesn’t even have FCC approval yet, and have many months of fine-tuning and fiddling left to do. Also, of course, your call quality will depend on how far you are from the cell tower.

“How about going to Google spreadsheets and docs to open Word documents and spreadsheets?” –Should work, in theory!

“Can the pinch gesture be used on Web pages?” –Yes! Also on email! So weird, but cool–I could zoom in and out on an entire email message: embedded photo, text, and all.

“Are both text and images both (almost) infinitely resizable with the pinch gesture?” –No. The smallest size is “fit the whole thing on the screen.” The largest seems to be, I don’t know, 4X or 8X actual size.

“So there are no speed dial keys??” –That one’s been bothering me, too. Even according to the demo at apple.com/iphone, it seems as though to dial, starting from the Home screen, you have to tap the Phone icon, then the keypad icon OR the phonebook icon, THEN tap someone’s name. I can’t believe Apple would design something that requires so many steps. Surely they’ve got a quicker method up their sleeve…

“Or is it that the email will not sync?” –The email doesn’t sync with anything. It sends and receives email from the Internet.

“Will the built-in sensors replace the need of the Nike sports kit for tracking running data?” –You’re kidding me, right?

“Is there going to be a security logon, so that if it is stolen that it is essentially useless for non-hacker thieves?” –I didn’t see it, but since that’s standard on iPods, I would imagine that it’ll be there.

“Will any songs downloaded to the phone itself be able to be used as ringtones?” –Apple says it hasn’t decided.

“Will the iPhone work without a SIM card installed? i.e., will it be able to surf the web/email?” –Very doubtful.

“Is the speakerphone any good?” –Yes, very good (for a cellphone).

“Didn’t steve demo a feature where Google maps knew where the phone was? Wouldn’t that require GPS?” –No, he didn’t. (Yes, it would.)

“Will the iPod FM radio work ?” –I’d guess yes, but don’t know for sure.

“Do I HAVE to use Cingular?” –ARRRRRGGGHHH!

“Can the iPhone be used as a modem for a MacBook?” –If the answer were yes, Apple surely would have touted that feature.

“Will it support disk mode like ipods?” –I’m guessing yes. (I do have a call in to Apple for all these “I’m guessing” answers, but it seems they’ve been a little busy recently…)

“Can you use it with an existing Cingular account, or will Cingular have a special iPhone group of plans with special features like the priority voice mail, etc?” –Cingular hasn’t yet determined service pricing.

“You referred to the screen as being a ‘glass surface.’ Was it a figure of speech or is it really made out of glass?” –Figure of speech. It’s the same polycarbonate that’s used for iPod screens, although apparently the coating has been substantially improved.

“Does the screen scratch easily?” –See above.

“Do you really think Apple’s just going to sit on it and not work on improving it for the next half-year? Give it time.” –Could not agree more!

“Will the iPhone touch surface work if you’re wearing gloves? Be unpleasant to use the phone in the dead of winter otherwise.” –No, it responds ONLY to skin touch. I couldn’t use my fingernail, for example. And you certainly can’t use a stylus. (On the other hand, I doubt there’s ANY smartphone you can operate with gloves on.)

“If it doesn’t sync with Outlook, does that mean it will not be compatible with Windows OS?” –No, it’s definitely Windows-compatible, in that it syncs with iTunes. (Music, photos, videos, etc.)

“Was there discussion of the CPU type?” –Mr. Jobs would not say what the processor is.

“Can you use it with iPod headphones - that is a bud in each ear? Or is it a single bud like other phones?” — It comes with stereo earbuds with a microphone/switch on the cord, and any iPod-compatible earphones work.

“How did they get OS X on a 4mb phone?” –It’s four GIGABYTES, not megabytes. And it’s not the whole Mac OS X.

“No 3G is almost a deal breaker. EDGE is horrible for a device this advanced…how did that get overlooked?” –It wasn’t overlooked. 3G (HSDPA) is available only in a few cities. Apple says that when it’s more prevalent, the company will upgrade the iPhone.

“Any word on whether the keypad will be available in the horizontal screen mode allowing larger keys, albeit a smaller text window?” –That orientation wasn’t available in the prototype; Apple hasn’t decided whether or not to add the landscape keyboard layout. (Also, interestingly: rotating the iPhone to change the screen orientation only works counterclockwise–and only, as Mr. Jobs said, “When it makes sense.” That is, not all programs rotate.)

“I think it’s a bit backwards and disappointing for Apple to introduce a product that requires MORE visual attention than most phones, and which has no tactile means of operation.” –I agree. At this early date, I think the phone may be the weakest part of the iPhone.

“How bright was the screen?” –Very.

“Is the virtual keyboard at least as quick and easy to use as entering text with a regular cellphone’s number keys?” –I’d say it’s a wash. The “virtual” keys make it slower than a BlackBerry, but at least you have the whole alphabet; you don’t have to press the 1 key three times to get the letter C, or whatever.

“Why is everyone missing the fact that this phone/device will seamlessly switch between Edge and Wi-Fi saving big $$$ on data rates?” –Because nobody bothers to post about what they LIKE. If Internetters can’t say something disparaging, they say nothing at all.

ik ben zelf al wat minder enthousiast over deze telefoon/pda. Ik denk dat ik zal gaan voor een palm of een windows mobile. Die kunnen toch deftig syncen.

- flash ondersteuning: misschien?
- geen mogelijkheid om office-bestanden te openen!
- geen draadloze sync mogelijkheden is wel een enorm minpunt
- geen mogelijkheid om emails te syncen is nog een groter minpunt
- niet compatibel met outlook zal niet echt leuk zijn voor vele pda-gebruikers
- geen 3rd party programma's, tenzij in een 'gecontroleerde omgeving' door apple. Enerzijds begrijp ik zijn standpunt, maar anderzijds zou ik héél graag
- een tomtom gezien hebben op de iphone. Misschien...?

Subject: We raken de weg kwijt

Dit is een uitval. Het spijt me.

Ik weet niet hoe het zover is gekomen dat het bedrijf het zicht kwijt is geraakt op wat het belangrijkste is voor onze klanten (zowel zakelijke als thuisgebruikers). Onze teams weten niet meer wat bugvrij betekent, wat veerkracht, volledige scenario's, veiligheid en prestaties betekenen, hoe belangrijk actuele applicaties zijn, en het daadwerkelijk begrijpen van de belangrijkste problemen waar onze klanten mee te maken hebben. Ik zie allemaal willekeurige features en fantastische visie, maar dat vertaalt zich niet in fantastische producten.

Als ik niet bij Microsoft zou werken, zou ik vandaag de dag een Mac kopen. Als je het equivalent van Virtual PC op een Mac draait, dan krijg je toegang tot alle Windows-applicatiesoftware (behalve de hardware dan). Bij Apple zijn ze de weg niet kwijt. Je moet de video hieronder eens bekijken. Dit laat misschien niet zozeer iets zakelijks zien, maar ik heb het dan ook over de filosofie die Apple hanteert. Ze denken in termen van scenario's. Ze houden het simpel. Ze denken snel. Ik weet dat er hier niets ontzettend diepgaands in zit.

Ik moet jullie alles vertellen dat mijn gevoel zegt dat we moeten doen, en wat ik gisteren plan B noemde. We hebben een eenvoudig en snel opslagsysteem nodig. Longhorn [codenaam voor Vista - red.] is een gedrocht en biedt naar mijn idee geen oplossing voor dit probleem. Als we de uitdaging waar Linux en Apple ons voor hebben gesteld, met glans willen doorstaan, moeten we de les 'scenario, eenvoud, snelheid' ter harte nemen.

Geruchten over breedbeeld-iPod en tablet-Mac
"Multi-touch-technologie ook in andere Apple-producten"

De iPhone zou slechts het eerste toestel zijn dat gebruikmaakt van de nieuwe multi-touch-technologie van Apple. Een breedbeeld-iPod en een tablet-Mac zullen volgen, zo gaat het gerucht op internet.


Speculaties over een breedbeeld-iPod met aanraakscherm circuleren al langer. Het enige verschil is dat Apple met de aankondiging van de iPhone heeft 'bewezen' over de benodigde technologie te beschikken. Als we de geruchten mogen geloven, zit deze nieuwe iPod-variant al in de laatste ontwikkelingsfase. De opslagcapaciteit van dit toestel zou liggen tussen de 80 en 100 GB.
De prijs voor de video-iPod komt dan te liggen tussen die van de duurste huidige iPod en de iPhone. De kans is overigens groot dat dit toestel nog vóór de iPhone in de winkelrekken komt te liggen.
De langverwachte tablet-Mac wordt in 2008 verwacht. Ook hij maakt gebruik van multi-touch, zij het op een groter scherm. Zowel de breedbeeld-iPod als de tablet-Mac zou draaien op een aangepaste versie van Mac OS X.

MacBook-bezitters zullen twee dollar moeten betalen om gebruik te kunnen maken van de snelle WiFi-technologie in hun systeem.


In tegenstelling tot eerdere speculaties en berichtgevingen zullen bezitters van een MacBook en MacBook Pro geen 4,99 dollar maar 1,99 dollar moeten betalen om de 802.11n-technologie in hun systeem te activeren. De WiFi-chip in hun systeem kan hier gebruik van maken, zo heeft een woordvoerder van Apple laten weten.
De patch om de 802.11n-capaciteiten in een Macbook te activeren, zal tegen een vergoeding van twee dollar te downloaden zijn op de website van Apple.
Elke Mac met Intels Core 2 Duo- of Xeon-processer beschikt over de 802.11n-chip, behalve de iMac van 17 inch met de 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo-chip, zo kondigde Apple vorige week aan op Macworld.
Klanten die voor 179 dollar het nieuwe Airport Extreme Base Station aanschaffen, krijgen de patch er gratis bij. Maar klanten die dit product niet willen kopen, zullen de twee extra dollars moeten uitgeven om de patch te kunnen downloaden. Dit wordt mogelijk vanaf begin februari.

Apple gaat geld vragen voor Boot Camp. Met Boot Camp kunnen Mac-gebruikers zowel Windows als Mac OS X op hun machines draaien. Volgens het Apple-blad Macscoop heeft de fabrikant van trendy gadgets besloten dat Mac OS X Tiger-gebruikers $29 moeten betalen om de eindversie van Boot Camp te kunnen gebruiken.

Boot Camp zal gratis meegeleverd worden met Leopard, de nieuwste versie van het besturingssysteem. Gebruikers van Tiger moeten dus upgraden naar Leopard of bijna 30 dollar betalen om Windows te kunnen draaien. Met de nieuwe versie van Boot Camp zullen gebruikers ook Windows Vista kunnen draaien.

Mac OS op pc door virtualisatiesoftware bewust 'afgeremd'

Met verschillende softwarepaketten is het mogelijk Windows op een Mac te draaien. Voor het gebruiken van Mac OS op een pc is officieel nog geen software beschikbaar. Bedrijven lijken de ontwikkeling van software die dat mogelijk moet maken bewust te vertragen.

Op de afgelopen MacWorld-conferentie kreeg Parallels een prijs voor zijn softwarepakket waarmee het mogelijk is om Windows en Mac OS tegelijkertijd op een Intel-Mac te draaien. Het nadeel van deze oplossing is wel dat er geschakeld moet worden tussen beide besturingssystemen. Parallels heeft echter aangekondigd dat ze binnen een maand met een nieuwe versie komen. Deze versie moet het mogelijk maken zowel Windows- als Mac-vensters op hetzelfde moment open te hebben. De nieuwe versie van Parallels is een teken dat virtualisatie op x86-hardware snel volwassen aan het worden is. Het Russisch-Amerikaanse bedrijf is echter niet de enige speler op deze markt. De bekendste leverancier van virtualisatiesoftware, Vmware, heeft aangekondigd deze zomer met een vergelijkbaar product voor de Mac te komen.

Tot op heden zijn er geen applicaties die de andere weg officieel ondersteunen: het draaien van Mac OS op een pc. Vmware geeft toe dat het met zijn applicatie wel mogelijk is - verschillende bedrijven zouden inmiddels Mac OS op Dell en HP computers gebruiken - maar haast zich te zeggen dat het geen bewuste feature is. Ook Parallels heeft aangegeven dat een toekomstige versie van zijn software - verwachte release dit voorjaar - het draaien van Mac OS op een pc eenvoudig mogelijk zal maken. Serguei Beloussov, directeur van Parallels' moederbedrijf Swsoft, zegt echter ook dat zijn bedrijf niet bewust bezig is om Mac OS op een pc te laten draaien. Dat het wel mogelijk is, is volgens hem simpelweg het gevolg van de hedendaagse techniek, waarbij virtualisatie niet alleen meer een kwestie van software is, maar er ook hardwarematige ondersteuning is.

Van oudsher is Apple weinig genegen om de controle over zijn producten uit handen te geven. Het bedrijf wil vooralsnog dan ook niet toestaan dat zijn os op systemen zonder het appellogo draait. Dat is waarschijnlijk ook de reden dat zowel Parallels als Vmware niet te koop loopt met de mogelijkheden die hun software biedt om Apples besturingssysteem op een pc te draaien; beide bedrijven willen niet met de advocaten van Apple te maken krijgen. De druk op Apple neemt ondertussen wel toe. Al in juni 2005 kondigde Michael Dell aan dat zijn bedrijf in principe wel Mac OS op zijn machines wilde installeren. Van dat standpunt is hij nog niet teruggekomen. 'Als Apple het toestaat, en onze klanten het willen, gaan we Mac OS op onze computers leveren. Het woord is aan Apple', aldus Dell in een recente e-mail aan een cnn-verslaggever. Het lijkt een kwestie van tijd geworden voordat Apple onder de toenemende druk bezwijkt, en zal toestaan dat zijn besturingssysteem ook op een gewone pc geïnstalleerd kan worden. Met de mogelijkheden die virtualisatiesoftware biedt is er in ieder geval geen technische beperking meer.

Ik zou dat toch zeer dom vinden eigenlijk, wat is het nut dan dat je de duurdere Apple-hardware aankoopt? Nuja, ik denk niet dat Apple dat zal doen eigenlijk.

Maar goed, dit is geen discussietopic.

We have just gotten an anonymous tip from a source that indicates that Apple is planning a special event on February 20 to introduce Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), iLife ‘07 and iWork ‘07 as well as updated Mac Pros. Mac Pros will be available immediately with a free upgrade to 10.5 when it ships, and the ship date for 10.5 will be confirmed for 3/24/07 as we have been predicting for quite some time now. There is some speculation that we may see a week earlier or later for this event, depending on the status of Leopard, but this is the most likely date which is being planned (by this time, Leopard’s new interface will be complete and the OS will be finishing up testing). What better way to demo Leopard than with a brand new 8-core Mac Pro?

Apple Announces Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2007

Apple has announced some preliminary details about this years Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

WWDC 2007 will take place from June 11-15th, 2007 in San Francisco, CA:
This June, the center of the Mac universe will be in downtown San Francisco, as developers and IT professionals from around the globe come together for the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. Don't miss this opportunity to connect with Apple engineers, get a firsthand look at the latest technology, and spend a week getting the kind of inspiration you won't find anywhere else.

Earlier rumors had pegged the date of the conference for this time. Last year's WWDC conference was delayed to August to coincide with Intel Mac Pros and the Leopard Preview.

WWDC is Apple's developer conference and focuses on developer topics. In recent years, with the demise of the summer Macworld expo, WWDC's keynote address has become a venue for significant Apple announcements.

Nu Apple iPods mag verkopen waar al muziek op staat, maakt de iPod een kans om de opvolger van de compact disc te worden. De overeenkomst die het computerbedrijf Apple afgelopen week heeft gesloten met de muziekuitgeverij Apple, heeft nog een bijwerking die zeer gunstig zou kunnen uitpakken voor het bedrijf van Steve Jobs, meldt nieuwssite Wired.com.


Voorheen mocht Apple geen iPods uitbrengen waarop al muziek stond geïnstalleerd. Maar nu kunnen er speciale shuffle-iPods worden geproduceerd met daarop nieuwe albums van bekende artiesten of zelfs de gehele discografie van één muzikant.
Door de lage productiekosten van Flash-geheugen lijkt de kans nu groot dat Apple met zijn iPod de opvolger van de compact disc in huis heeft.
Er zijn al geruchten dat Apple rond Valentijnsdag een gele iPod uit gaat brengen, geheel in de stijl van de Yellow Submarine van The Beatles. Een perfecte gelegenheid om het klassieke album in digitaal formaat aan te bieden op een iPod.

There are actually two pieces of VMWare-related news for you all. Yesterday, the company announced its initial public offering (IPO) plans to the world: VMWare will sell about 10 percent of the company via stock sometime this summer. Through the IPO, they hope to increase brand visibility and strengthen employee retention and recruiting... as well as make tons of cash. Good luck to them on that—VMWare is a very large and very solid company with a lot of experience behind them in the world of virtualization.

The second piece of news, which is perhaps far more interesting to Mac users, was that a mysterious, anonymous video was leaked yesterday showing Windows 3D graphics acceleration running on VMWare for OS X. Watch the rather amateurish video for yourself, and ponder it in awe. Needless to say, the video and its implications generated a bit of buzz among virtualization and, more importantly, gaming fans yesterday.

Faked? Probably not. If the observations made by Regis "HPReg" Duchesne on the VMWare blog are to be considered, it appears as if the video is in fact very real:

Somebody managed to get a hand on an internal beta build of VMware Fusion whose UI offers a way to accelerate 3D graphics in virtual machines, and even made a video of some serious 3D gaming action in Fusion.

The author of this video (a woman if the female voice-over is any indication?) is obviously a dedicated VMware and Mac zealot. While I wish we had done this video ourselves, given how well the video has been received so far, I can only say "Thank You."​

Indeed. While the video isn't exactly professionally-made, it seems to have certainly done its job of spreading the word that 3D graphics acceleration is on the way pretty soon from VMWare. When, exactly? Well, that's the part that nobody knows yet, and Mr. Duchesne conveniently failed to mention that tiny detail in his post. Since it was from an internal beta, I think it's pretty safe to assume that the features still have a while before they make it to public beta, and eventually final release.

That said, marketing manager Ben Rudolph of Parallels continues to maintain to Ars that 3D graphics acceleration is on the way, expected to be part of the next major beta. However, will VMWare beat Parallels to the punch?

Tons of Mac hardware releases for Q2, black iMac on the way?
While the release of Microsoft's Vista earlier this month is said to be seriously challenging Apple on its recent PC market share catch-up, tipsters well placed at Apple informed MacScoop that the company is preparing to make the fight harder for its competitors of the Windows world with several Mac hardware releases scheduled for calendar Q2.

Possibly all line-ups updated by end of June?

Sources told MacScoop there is strong possibility that most or all the Mac line-ups will see a refresh by the end of June and that the company should start making its first 2007 Mac hardware announcements as soon as during March.

The three line-ups that have seen the longest product cycles are Xserves (August 2006), Mac Pros (August 2006) and Mac minis (September 2006). With no word from sources on specific Apple hardware refreshes, we can only speculate that these three line-ups will be prioritized.

Black iMac on the way?

The only specific information MacScoop has recently obtained from sources regarding Apple's forthcoming hardware releases is that a black version of the iMac could make its way with the next update of the company's all-in-one consumer desktop Macs.

Sources also told us that - as it is currently the case for the MacBook - the black color could be available only on the high-end 24 inch iMac and possibly the 20 inch as well.

Apple has started making black-flavored products since the introduction of the first generation iPod nano on September 2005, followed by a black video-enabled iPod in October 2005. A few months later, after the huge success of this flavor on the iPod, the company introduced the MacBook (May 2006) which was available in black for the top of the line model. The black MacBook also received very good market acceptance although it was initially criticized for its unfairly high pricing.

Previous reports published on MacScoop as well as on other sites provided some early hints on what could be in Apple's product pipeline for 2007.

Mac Pros are said to be ready for the 8-Core jump in their next update while the MacBook Pro line-up could be broaden with a smaller form factor. Other rumours on the Internet suggest that the MacBook will come in a 15 inch version for low-budget big-screen laptop fans.

Meanwhile, Apple Cinema Displays have not seen any major update since June 2004. The company's display line-up was only subject of price-cuts and minor spec changes. Some MacScoop sources recently hinted at new sizes on the product line and believe Apple could introduce HDMI/HDCP capable displays with built-in iSight.

Hardware announcements in time for Leopard and Creative Suite 3 releases?

The coming months will be subject to major software releases for the Mac world both from Apple and third-party software developers.

A recent report claimed that Apple could release Mac OS X Leopard as soon as late March and we expect the company to release iLife '07 and iWork '07 at the same time.

Moreover, a Merill Lynch analyst recently said that Creative Suite 3.0, which is the first Intel native version of Adobe's professional creation software suite, could arrive in the same "late March" timeframe.

Other developers such as Microsoft are expected to deliver Intel-native versions of their software this year. At the end of 2007 the transition to the Intel architecture will be 100% complete.

One can expect both consumer and Pro-oriented hardware updates to coincide with the releases of Leopard and Creative Suite. But again, there is no word from our sources yet on that.

Geruchten over ultracompacte MacBook
Subnotebook moet voltreffer in Japan worden

Geruchtensite AppleInsider zegt weet te hebben van een nieuw notebookproject binnen Apple. Het computerbedrijf zou sleutelen aan een zeer compacte MacBook, kleiner dan het huidige model met 13 inch-scherm. Andere bronnen spreken over een MacBook met een 15 inch-scherm die de kloof tussen de huidige MacBook en de duurdere 15 inch MacBook Pro moet dichten.


Apple zou met de zeer compacte notebook zijn positie in de Japanse markt willen verbeteren. Momenteel loopt de verkoop in Japan minder goed. Een mininotebook zou daar iets aan kunnen veranderen. Zogenaamde subnotebooks zijn immers in het Aziatische land stukken populairder dan elders ter wereld.
AppleInsider kan niet veel vertellen over de mogelijke specificaties van de compacte MacBook. Met een vermeende lancering rond het tijdstip van de volgende Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in juni, is het daarvoor nog te vroeg. De site denkt wel dat de notebook wordt uitgerust met NAND-Flashgeheugen om het opstartproces te versnellen en het energiegebruik te drukken.

Geen Apple nieuws, maar ik denk voor de meesten wel interessant.

Misschien heb je wel al gehoord van VMWare Fusion.
Voor diegenen die het niet kenne, het is de virtualisatiesoftware (zoals parallels, virtualbox, vmware, virtual pc) van VMWare (de virtualisatie marktleider, maar voornamelijk op linux/windows), maar Fusion is dus de OS X versie.

Wel, het nieuws:
Er is een nieuwe beta uitgekomen.
En die ondersteunt als eerste in een virtualisatiepakket: Hardware 3D.
Experimenteel, maar toch.

Voor diegenen die er es mee willen spelen.

Imo wel een mijlpaal in de virtualisatietechnologie. Dit is iets waar men al jaren naar zoekt, maar wat nooit bleek te lukken. Als dit goed werkt (momenteel is het een experimentele beta) en het wordt overgenomen in enkele andere producten (parallels) dan wordt virtualisatie ECHT een volwaardig alternatief voor BootCamp.

Lancering Adobe Creative Suite 3 op 27 maart

Adobe's Creative Suite 3 (CS3) is vanaf 27 maart wereldwijd verkrijgbaar. Op een speciaal evenement in New York zal de lancering van het pakket gevierd worden.
Adobe heeft reeds een "teaser" website met video gelanceerd voor Creative Suite 3.

CS3 bevat een nieuwe versie van Photoshop, waarvan reeds eerder een beta werd uitgebracht. Tevens zullen onder andere de bekende applicaties Illustrator en InDesign aanwezig zijn.

CS3 is de eerste versie van het pakket dat geschikt is voor Intel-Macs. Er wordt dan ook verwacht dat de release van CS3 een impuls zal geven aan de verkoop van nieuwe Macs.
