As a fan of the book I knew it wasn't going to be the same.
However, there were several clues that seemed to be leading to Neville discovering the infected do in fact have some humanity.
1) When he captured the female, the male risked death by coming out into the sunlight. Neville even made note of this and thought it was strange, deducing that the male had forgotten his own survival instincts. Of course this was a clue that the male had other instincts still intact, to rescue one of his own.
2) The same male somehow set the trap and used dogs to try to kill Neville.
3) When Anna looks up at the wall and realizes how many infected Neville has killed. This seemed like a homage/tie in with the murderous Neville of the book.
4) When the infected rush the lab, the male pushes all the others out of the way.
All of this was leading to a moment where Neville should have turned the gun on the cured woman, seen the male stop and realize that he was in fact a murderer in his own right. He should have broken down and dropped the gun. The infected rush into the room and kill the now surrendering Neville who realizes while he may have found a cure, he was a butcher as well.
I believe this is what was filmed as the original ending as the shot I'm describing for the end is actually IN THE TRAILER but not the film. That and the whole Believer/Athiest thing with Anna seemed really forced to suddenly be all that Neville's arc was about. Following the butterfly and her butterfly tattoo seemed like something out of "Signs," a useless plot device.
I'm sure this ending was way too morally ambiguous for the studio and they went with the Neville was always right, fought and died for the cure ending.
It's too bad because when you are watching a movie intently and then it suddenly loses its nerve and doesn't make good on its own promises it really ruins the experience.
It's simple really. If you aren't going to pay something off, don't set it up.
