alexander corvinus was the first immortal to walk the planet. he had 2 sons (and a third later on). his first two sons were marcus and william. both were immortal. marcus was bitten by a bat and became the first vampire. william was bitten by a wolf (not a werewolf) and became the first werewolf (not lycan). the third son was just a normal child (not sure the time frame on when the third was born, but alexander had been alive for AT LEAST 1400 yrs before dying in evolution, so u can imagine how much time he had for it). the third sons bloodline is how micheal came to be. a pure-blood descendant (not bitten) of the worlds first immortal, but without the immortal gene.
between the original two sons, marcus was able to control himself. william was not. he was completely out of control and unable to change back to human form, ever. anyone he fed on became a werewolf and was also unable to change back to human form. marcus always felt a strong bond between himself and his brother, william, and had decided from day one that he would try to save him.
marcus bit viktor on his death bed because he was a strong, powerful general in his own time and he wanted his power and his armies to help him stop the werewolves and, ultimately, give him the chance to save his brother. marcus agreed, from that point on, viktor would be called the first vampire, and for that, lord of all vampires, as his sacrifice for viktors help.
this is when the rise of the lycans story takes place. viktor ended up finding a werewolf in one of his dungeons who had given birth to a werewolf baby with the ability to take human form. he killed the mother and was about to kill the baby but decided to let him live. that boy became lucian, the very first lycan (a werewolf who is able to take human form at will).
due to lucians infectious blood, the humans he fed on became lycans. viktor used the lycans as his day guards. he feared their obvious strength, so he forced them to wear collars around their neck which would kill them if they ever took werewolf form and forbade them from ever removing them. thats how he kept them under control and was able to use them as slaves.
inbetween the beginning of rise of the lycans (when the lycans were first created) and later on (when sonja was older), viktor and amelia finally found william. marcus reminded him of his deal: william wouldnt be harmed. this is also around the time when marcus told viktor that if either brother died, their respective bloodlines would, as well. viktor decided life imprisonment for william was the best strategy. it allowed him to keep his deal with marcus, but at the same time stop william from wreaking so much havoc and also keep the lycans as his slaves.
viktor ended up using selenes father to create the prison for william. once the prison was made, two keys were forged-- one would not work without the other. one, viktor would keep within his own body, and the other, around his daughter, sonjas, neck. selenes father allowed selene to play with it for a time before giving it to viktor (which is why she remembers the key, but never what it was for). and so william was imprisoned and marcus went into his elder hibernation, along with amelia (their coffins are referenced by viktor at the end of rise of the lycans).
at this point, some of the story is obvious. viktor was left in charge while the other elders slept. lucian fell in love with sonja. he removed his collar to save sonjas life. viktor, as always, would not bend the rules. he took away all special privileges and treated lucian as just another slave. lucian broke out but went back for sonja. sonja and lucian fought their way out, but both were captured. sonja told her father, viktor, that she was pregnant with lucians baby. he killed her for it. viktor went in to take the second key from her burned neck when lucian saw the full moon, gained enough strength to break free and change form, and strike viktor while taking the second key and running off. (he doesnt know its a key, but he regards it as a memento of his love, sonja.) battle ensues, he kills viktor (poorly, might i add), and takes over the castle. u see tanus sail to safety with the three elders (marcus, amelia, and viktor) in their coffins on the boat. (tanus is the guy who helped lucian escape and is also the guy put to exile by selene, and apparently killed by marcus, in evolution.)
this is when viktor decided to kill selenes family. he had lost the castle to the lycans and feared for anyone to know of william and the keys, especially since lucian had one (even though, again, lucian doesnt know what it is). he couldnt bear to kill selene because he had just murdered his own daughter and selene reminded him of her. viktor told selene that it was the lycans who killed her family and he then turned her into a vampire, giving her immortality and every reason to hate and kill the lycans.
so the first movie comes into play. lucian had been wanting to create a perfect hybrid as his final mission since its exactly why viktor killed sonja-- to prevent the "abomination" and protect the species. amelia was the elder who was awake. she was supposed to awaken marcus, but selene awoke viktor 100 yrs and a day too early, for advice. amelia is killed on the train for her elder blood. it was to be fused with micheal who was turned into a lycan by lucian and then captured. u see lucian wearing sonjas necklace (the second key) throughout the movie. selene bites micheal to save his life, creating the perfect hybrid, as lucian wanted. lucian is killed and viktor finds the key around his neck. selene and micheal discover the truth, that viktor started the war by killing his pregnant daughter and lucians love, and also that he killed her family, not the lycans. selene kills viktor and she and micheal find the necklace (second key) and walk off with it.
the second movie starts. marcus awakens a hybrid himself, due to the blood from the dead lycan doctor killed by viktor in the first movie. marcus decides, with his new found power, the fact that hes the last surviving elder and will never again hybernate while others rule, along with lucians death and all the chaos from leaderless species, now would be the best time for he and his brother to reign over all immortals. he goes off to find clues. he finds his father is still alive. he kills him to protect his new love for power. he finds from selenes blood where william is kept, and also takes both parts of the key. selene drinks alexanders blood and becomes "the future" of all immortals (not just vampires). marcus releases william, but they are both killed-- william by micheal and marcus by selene.
the one part that is arguable is the very end. is selene able to walk in the day now that shes the "future" of all immortals, or is it because the original vampire, marcus, was killed and now shes human again? her eyes were no longer blue, but brown when she faced micheal in the end, signifying her change. and if thats true, since william is also dead, does that mean all werewolf and lycan are human again, as well? only reason i say this is arguable is because of her brown eyes. but me thinks its cause shes kind of a day-walker (like blade, but a *beep* ton stronger, faster, better, and still immortal, plus no longer JUST a vampire).
