Grand Theft Auto 5's three main characters – Michael, Franklin and Trevor – won't all be playable at the start of the game, Rockstar has revealed.
Speaking to French website jeuxactu.com (translated via Google), Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies explained that offering players control over all three characters immediately would have "hurt the gameplay and story", while introducing the characters over a period of time will let players "explore the world of each of them".
"Much of the game relies on the three characters and the way in which the lifestyle and actions of one affect the other two," said Benzies. "We think of the three characters from the start but we thought that it would hurt the gameplay and the story. We want to give the player the opportunity to know the three characters individually and explore the world of each of them, and it would not have been possible if the three had been available from the start."
It isn't known in which order the characters will become playable. But even though you may not be able to play as each of them at the start, GTA 5's entire map will be explorable from the beginning, and characters will be able to meet each other between missions.
"You can meet each character if you know where they are," adds lead designer Imran Sarwar. "For example, if Michael leaves after a mission and you play Trevor, you can go to meet him. You can also force things, if you wish, from one character to another and make them meet. They can then become friends and spend time together. We thought to make the characters appear on the map to be able to follow the day to day in the city, but we chose to focus our efforts on the system of interchangeable characters."
Karre zei:Eigenlijk ging ik er sowieso al vanuit dat men dat zo ging doen. Leek me ook het meest logische. Ik gok wel dat we met Michael gaan beginnen.

There’s never been a Rockstar game as gigantic as Grand Theft Auto 5. Its land mass alone is three-and-a-half times bigger than Red Dead Redemption’s, and the total playable area once you factor in underwater regions is five times the size of John Marston’s cowboy classic. Overall, it’s larger than GTA: San Andreas, GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption combined. That’s a lot of Blaine County to get lost in.
Player acquisition has also made its triumphant return, on a scale that almost defies belief – in addition to purchasing property as the money comes rolling in, you’re able to buy businesses (nothing new there, if you played previous efforts for any length of time), garages and even marinas.
Is there anything new outside of the plot missions for you to complete?
Appart from all the sporting activities and usual GTA diversions Rockstar North has learned some lessons from Red Dead Redemption, and both the ‘emergent’ and ‘stranger’ missions popularised by that game play a significant part in GTA 5. I even see one of the latter for myself.
It takes place in Vinewood as part of the Michael playthrough. Like in Red Dead, triggering the mission is achieved by walking to a question mark on the mini-map, and this particular stranger is an A-list celeb called Lacy Jonas, hiding behind a trailer, nervously eyeing up paparazzi on the corner where the alleyway meets Vinewood Boulevard. Her request is simple: grab yourself a car, pick her up and zoom her past the waiting photographers before they can get her snapped.
That part is easy, but this is GTA – so inevitably completing the mission is less straightforward. Turns out not all the paps are on foot, so the mission evolves to see you trying to shake them off as they trail by road. Lacy spends half this time bemoaning the attention she attracts – and half pleading for ego boosts. “How’s my hair? Do I look cute?” It’s a classic Rockstar swipe at the conjoined insecurity and vanity of celebdom. Very GTA, and very funny.
Finally losing your camera-waving tail, Lacy asks you to drop her home – and after a short drive to the traditional yellow marker on the mini-map (now rectangular rather than circular), leaps out at her plush abode.
Will there be bus routes?
Amazingly, yes! Well, at least one. As Michael passes an open-top bus during our playthrough, he is offered a tour of Vinewood for two bucks – and Rockstar confirms you can leap on and be driven about in legroom-free luxury. Taxis are also back as a means of fast travel.
Can you check your bank balance at cash machines?
You certainly can.
Will there be a PS4 version, and if so should I wait for that?
The question we were asked the most. (And which Rockstar – perhaps understandably – currently won’t answer.) Given that GTA V has been in development for several years, it’s highly unlikely that a PS4 version would be ready for the console’s November launch window.
A big innovation in GTA 5 is the inclusion of heists: missions that aren’t necessarily part of the main storyline, yet see all three characters working together to pull off a job that, when completed, has them splitting a sizeable reward three ways. The three-person mission I see is similar to one such heist, but forms part of the main storyline.
It’s entitled Blitz Play, and introduced with a cutscene where our three protagonists go over their plans in detail. Michael’s contacts with the FIB have asked him to retrieve something valuable from an armed IAA vehicle, and naturally knocking on the door and politely asking for it back isn’t an option.
Instead, our three men don masks – Trevor looking especially comical as a monkey – and split up. For the first half of the mission, you no longer have the option of switching between characters: the game contextually decides who you control. To begin with, we’re Michael, driving a garbage truck to the waypoint on the map in readiness for the ambush we’re about to perform. Once there, we park across a single-lane road to ensure the IAA vehicle’s route is blocked off.
The next task is to take control of Franklin and again drive to the specified waypoint, this time in a tow truck, preparing to play a little game of ram-and-take. With that done, control switches to Trevor on higher ground – he’s monitoring the situation with binoculars in order to make sure everything runs in sync.
Once Trevor has spotted the approaching IAA security van, he tells Franklin to be on standby, and control switches back to the boy racer. The target security vehicle stops in front of the obstruction, as planned, and Franklin goes careering into its side, flipping it in readiness for the next step: boom time. Leaping out of the tow truck, Franklin dashes over to the overturned van and plants a sticky bomb on its rear doors. Still in control, we then scurry back to a safe distance and detonate said explosive by tapping left, before dashing in to collect the required cargo. Rockstar’s movie nods are legendary, and there’s a strong sense of Heat to everything about this.
In seconds, police cars, SWAT vans and a chopper swarm the scene. This is where the character switching comes into its own. Should you wish to play as the same protagonist, you can – but the real fun (and challenge) comes from toggling between the three. Franklin stays on the ground, hiding behind cover, armed with a machine gun; Michael, similarly armed, has made his way up to a low roof to provide a different angle of attack; Trevor, still on higher ground, has come to this fuzz-dropping disco with both a sniper rifle and a rocket launcher.
The next two minutes are a whirlwind of character switching and police death. Our Rockstar rep shifts between Franklin and Michael to pick off rozzers, with Trev’s rifle coming into play for taking out cops in cover. When the helicopter’s attentions become too hot to handle, he switches to the RPG and sends it up in flames with a single shot.
With the last five-o downed via another Trevor headshot from on high, it’s time to remove all evidence of your involvement in this havoc. Franklin – evidently the junior member of the trio – is the man tasked with cleaning up, leaping into the garbage truck and driving to a remote location in order to swap over to a getaway car. After he’s torched the dumpster by tossing a grenade under it, naturally.
While elements of Blitz Play appear linear, you’ll have done a fair bit of the groundwork in previous missions. The masks worn by the crew and the tow truck have both been acquired via prior tasks, and even the safe haven in which to destroy the evidence and secure the getaway vehicle is pre-scouted.
