Hail and well met Wise one!
We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulty staying in the game, and understand that it must be very frustrating at this point for you.
Error 201 occurs when there are general connectivity issues between a player and The Elder Scrolls Online service or when the player's game client is out of date. The most recent version of the client will now send players a pop-up message when they need to update before logging in, but older versions will simply return a 201 error message until they are updated to the current version.
If players receive an error 201 message, they should take the following steps:
Log out of the game completely and quit to the desktop
Open the ESO launcher
Click on Game Options(next to the gear icon in the middle of the launcher)
Select Check for Updates
Allow the update process to run to completion
Attempt to log back in and continue playing
If this error continues to occur, players should also take these additional steps:
Log out of the game completely and quit to the desktop
Wait a few minutes
Attempt to log back in and continue playing
If these options do not resolve your issue please follow the steps below:
Navigate to your "My Documents" or "Documents" folder in the start menu.
Delete the folder named "Elder Scrolls Online". This is a settings folder. It will repopulate when the game launches again.
Navigate to the install directory, typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\Launcher, and delete the "Program Data" folder.
Close out of all screens and return back to your desktop.
(These next steps are known as "Clean-booting" your computer and will disable all programs and services that start with your computer that are not the basic Microsoft services. During these steps, please pay special attention to the note that will inform you how to reverse these changes if you so choose. You do not need to reverse these changes and no program on your computer is deleted. They simply do not start, when your computer starts; you will need to manually start them.)
Follow these instructions from Microsoft on "Clean Boot"
How to perform a clean boot in Windows
After clicking Apply and Ok, you will need to restart your computer. When the computer boots, you will open the ESO Launcher and use the game repair feature
If none of these steps resolve your issue, please respond to this email letting us know and we will further investigate what could be causing this madness!
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, and appreciate your patience. As the Elder Scrolls Online Team and all of Tamriel are counting on you to end this reign of terror and conquer the evil that is Molag Bal!
Warm Regards,
The Elder Scrolls Online Team
