Tuurlijk wel, ze mogen zich dan wel afgescheurd hebben maar het blijven dezelfde soort mensen.
Two groups claim responsibility
Claims of responsibility for the Massereene shootings came last night from both Oglaigh na Eireann and the Real IRA. Allison Morris reports
Just a few weeks ago I sat face to face with representatives of a group of dissident republicans calling themselves Oglaigh na hEireann and during that meeting they said their main objective would be to kill British soldiers and serving members of the PSNI.
A few weeks previously the group had been responsible for a massive car bomb abandoned on the outskirts of Castlewellan – its planned destination had been Ballykinler army base.
Since the emergence of the Oglaigh na hEireann group, which claims to be made up of members of the Provisional and Real IRA, Hugh Orde requested undercover British army operatives be brought back to Northern Ireland to
assist police.
The group, which is thought to have members in Belfast, Co Down and mid-Ulster, claimed it was simply “bad luck” the Co Down bomb
had not reached its intended target.
“Look, people think that the IRA were this professional outfit that managed to pull off every operation but I can tell you back then we had to abandon or call off about 70 per cent of jobs because of a last-minute hitch,” a spokesperson said.
“These things happen, it’s a set back but doesn’t take away from our aim.
“We may not be successful next time either but mark my words we will get them.”
Since the Omagh atrocity so-called dissident republicans have not been considered to pose a major threat to the stability of the peace process by the British and Irish governments.
The PSNI battle against the breakaway groups has been largely effective, with previous attempts at reigniting violence sporadic and mainly unsuccessful.
That was until Saturday evening when dissident republican gunmen armed with automatic weapons shot dead two serving members of the British army and seriously wounded four other people including two pizza delivery men.
Again an army base was the target but this time, despite Hugh Orde warning that intelligence indicated an attack was imminent, the gunmen were able to carry out their murderous mission.
It was the first time a British soldier had been murdered in Northern Ireland since 1997.
Claims of responsibility were made last night by both Oglaigh na hEireann and the Real IRA.
The first came from the Real IRA, in the name of its “south Antrim unit”, in a phone call to the Sunday Tribune.
In a statement, the paper said: “The caller said he made no apologies for targeting British soldiers while they continued to occupy Ireland and also said he made no apologies for targeting the pizza delivery men who, he said, were collaborating with the British by servicing them.”
The Real IRA was formed in 1997 and has been responsible for sporadic attacks in Northern Ireland and England but is most notorious for the bombing of Omagh.
It is now largely based in the north west.
However, a republican source last night also received a claim from Oglaigh na hEireann using a recognised codeword.
The source said it was made in the name of “the volunteers of the hunger strike martyrs battalion” and was in response to the mobilisation of special forces against dissident republicans.
The INLA are not suspected of the shooting, while the Continuity IRA is not believed to have the capability at this time.
