"On the injury front we expect Wayne to join with us today in training and possibly Rio Ferdinand and we will see how they do," Ferguson highlighted.
"We have a couple of days and the fact that Wayne missed last week's game after we let the ankle settle, and we don't have any issues with that now, hopefully he is okay but groin injuries are groin injuries and at this time of year when the grounds become a bit firm it can be a problem.
"Hopefully if he comes through today it gives us something to think about for Sunday."
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney claimed his second major award of a remarkable season on Friday when he was named Footballer of the Year for the first time by the Football Writers Association (FWA).

Balotelli's car sabotaged: 'They could’ve killed him.'
1 May 2010
The agent of Internazionale striker Mario Balotelli, seen here after the first match against Barcelona, has revealed that Inter fans have sabotaged the car of the 19-year-old forward.(GSM) - Mino Raiola, Mario Balotelli's agent, has revealed that fan anomisity has taken a potentially dead turn: “Someone loosened the wheel nuts on his car. They could’ve killed him.”
Internazionale supporters have repeatedly jeered the striker and even tried to attack him in the San Siro car park after he threw his shirt to the ground in the first Barcelona game.
However, Mino Raiola explains that some have taken their protests too far.
“A few days ago Mario found that someone had loosened the wheel nuts on his car. If someone isn’t careful, he risks getting killed on the motorway.
“We certainly cannot carry on like this. In these circumstances Mario will not remain for another year at Inter, I can guarantee that.”
Balotelli made a public apology to the Nerazzurri, but the tension surrounding him remains very high.
“Mario is not angry with the fans, nor with his teammates, but clearly the problems with the club have not been resolved,” continued Raiola.
“I don’t know if and how quickly they can be resolved. Balotelli apologised sincerely, but someone at the club didn’t understand that. They didn’t want to understand it.
“I had promised not to talk until the second leg with Barcelona, but I saw that on Tuesday Jose Mourinho gave his view in a Press conference....
“Now I think I really need to talk to the club. I have to defend the interests of my client. I discuss matters with the club, then I don’t know if the club is led by Mourinho or not. It depends on President Massimo Moratti.”
Raiola also represents former Inter star Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was on the losing side in the Champions League semi-final.
“Ibra has no regrets, he consciously chose to go to Barcelona, long before anyone else knew about it.
“The Spanish media criticises him now, but that is only normal. When you lose the Press goes on the attack, when you win they consider you a hero. It’s not nice, but it is part of the job.”
While Broughton was at Anfield alongside Managing Director Christian Purslow on Thursday, one fixture he won't be attending is this weekend's Barclays Premier League clash with Chelsea.
With Liverpool needing three points to keep their Champions League dreams alive and with Chelsea requiring two wins to secure the title, Broughton - a self-confessed lifelong Chelsea fan - admits it wouldn't be appropriate for him to take his place in the Directors Box on Sunday.
"Any true fan who has supported a club for 55 years - like I have - can't be expected to suddenly move against them overnight," he added.
"When you have followed a team for as long as I have then it's in the blood. It's a very emotional thing and all fans who have supported Liverpool for a long time will know what I mean.
"I can't come to the match on Sunday and show any of that emotion because that would be very disrespectful to the Liverpool faithful. Liverpool have terrific fans and I wouldn't want to do that, so the only sensible thing is for me to stay at home and watch it on the television.
"I suppose the perfect scenario would be for Liverpool to win this weekend and go on to secure Champions League qualification and then for Chelsea to go on and win the title. That would be great if it were to happen."
