Commisserations to the gutsy Algerians who played a good defensive game. Ghoulam showed Baines how to defend as a full-back, and M'Bolhi showed Casillas and Haghighi how to handle corners and free-kicks without relying on freebies from referees and linesmen.
The Belgians were massively disappointing for the first half. Mourinho must have had a laugh again. First Casillas proves Mou right in his personnel decisions at Real, and Hazard and Lukaku obliged the Portuguese in this game by showing that they must improve at Chelsea as instructed, as well.
Hazard ran into too many dead ends in the first half and De Bruyne clearly missed his mates Snowy and Captain Haddock. Chadli was always a strange choice ahead of the in-form Mertens, and quickly proved that the Napoli player should have started instead.
And then Wilmots did what far too few managers do at this level and actually corrected his mistakes one-by-one with immediate effect. Mertens in, and boy is this guy lightning in a bottle! He completely re-invigorated his team, getting the best out of Hazard and Tintin.
Origi did exactly the same when he came in for the underwhelming Lukaku, and then came the somewhat surprising masterstroke in Fellaini's entry. Everton Fellaini.
So fitting then that Fellaini and Mertens scored. The Man U guy could have had a hat-trick. Really!
It's highly likely that the Belgian team that ended the game will start the next match, and it's likely too that Januzaj will see a lot of action before this tournament is over. Chadli and Lukaku will now have moved to the back of the queue and Dembele can't be too sure of many starts either.
Belgium have been strangely lucky. The Algerians kindly showed Wilmots the current deficiencies in the team in a proper test and now the Belgians will be all the stronger going forward in this tournament. Wilmots just needs to solve the Vertonghen problem first. Terrible game from him. Is Ciman the answer?
Enjoyable game despite Belgium's best efforts to bore us all to death for 45 minutes.
