Archief - Opleiding PHP ontwikkelaar bij VDAB

Hi there,

Sorry for the message in English, I hope you won’t mind. I’m learning Dutch but I’m not condident enough to write a long post without making a ton of mistakes.*

So I’m French, I live in Ghent (my partner is Flemish) and I quit my job as a technical writer a few months ago. I used to write manuals and educational material for multimedia and houseware equipment.

I’ve been learning Dutch for about 4 months and I’m level B1 now. I will soon start a 3-months training with the VDAB to improve my Dutch in a professional environment in order to start another training afterwards in Web Development.

For now I have two trainings in mind:
- Web developer with BeCode:
- PHP ontwikelaar with the VDAB

There’s a selection process with BeCode and I’m not sure the timing will be work well for me. It might be more practical to start a training with the VDAB. I’d like to know if you have experience – or know people who have experience – with this particular training. And also what you think about the program and potential job opportunities afterwards?

Here's the program of the VDAB training:
- programmatielogica en Object Oriented Programming
- gegevensanalyse, MySQL
- web intro
- html/css
- Javascript
- PHP volgens het MVC-principe
- een PHP-framework zoals Symfony, Laravel, ...
- Scrum
- optionele modules: een CMS zoals Drupal, Jquery, ...

I’m very much aware that a big part of web development is self study and that a portfolio is worth any certificate/diploma. I’ve already started with HTML5, CSS, Javascript and PHP on Sololearn and I will keep studying by myself before beginning a training anyway. My partner is also a high-skilled programmer so I know what’s ahead of me.

I’m almost 40 years old, I need/want a career change (there’s not many job offers in my current field anyway), and I’m taking the time for it. I just want to make sure I’m not making a mistake by going with the VDAB, both in terms of training and job opportunities afterwards.

Ik heb geen ervaring met deze cursus, maar wel met die van system engineer. De cursussen van VDAB worden zeker naar waarde geschat door werkgevers.

Ik heb die cursus meer dan 10 jaar geleden gevolgd. Het is idd allemaal zelfstudie dus de uitkomst hangt volledig van jezelf af..
Op het einde van de cursus heb ik een stageplaats gezocht (ik denk niet dat dat verplicht was) want ik wou toch iets van praktische ervaring opdoen.
Na de stageperiode hebben ze me een contract aangeboden. Ik heb dat iets meer dan een jaar volgehouden want ik vond design maar niets.. Geef mij maar een lijst met functionaliteiten die nodig zijn, niet een container die 2px meer naar links moet.. Oh nee naar rechts.. Een beetje donkerder? Maar het was een klein bedrijf dus ik kon niet kieskeurig zijn.

Na wat 'tsjoolen' ben ik aan de slag gegaan in een reporting afdeling van een groot bedrijf waar mn SQL kennis een goeie basis was.
Meer dan 10 jaar later ben ik 'Senior Product Analyst'

tl;dr: De cursus heeft zeker potentieel

Bedankt voor je feedback. Hoewel het voornamelijk zelfstudie was, was het gemakkelijk om hulp te vragen? Kun je op elk moment met een instructeur praten?

Er waren 2 a 3 instructeurs voor pakweg 18 mensen. Ze waren altijd beschikbaar voor vragen en ze hadden ook altijd genoeg geduld (of zo ondervond ik het toch).
Ik kan eigenlijk niets negatiefs zeggen over de cursus.
