Five Phases of Evasion:
1. Immediate Actions – REMAIN CALM. THINK BEFORE YOU ACT!
• Assess immediate situation.
• Assess medical condition; treat as necessary.
• Protect from chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear hazards.
• Gather equipment; determine the need to travel.
• Establish initial hide site.
• Make initial radio contact in accordance with communication plan/special instructions (SPINS). 523
• Sanitize self of compromising information.
• Sanitize area; hide equipment you decide to leave.
• Retain personal protection equipment (i.e., body armor).
• Apply initial personal camouflage.
2. Initial Movement
• Move in the direction of your evasion plan of action (EPA)/contingency plan.
• Break line of sight from your initial isolation area and move uphill if possible.
• Move out of area (chapter II). Zigzag pattern recommended.
• Use terrain and concealment to your advantage.
• Move to hide site.
3. Hide Site
• Select hide site that provides: − Concealment from ground and air searches. − Safe distance from enemy/high traffic areas/natural lines of drift. − Listening and observation points. − Multiple avenues of escape. − Protection from the environment. − Communications/signaling.
• Be prepared to authenticate in accordance with communications plan/SPINS.
• Establish radio contact in accordance with communication plan/SPINS. − Note: Communications/signaling devices may compromise position.
• Drink water, treat injuries.
• Reevaluate the tactical situation.
• Inventory equipment.
• Review and execute your EPA/contingency plan.
• Determine location.
• Improve camouflage.
• Stay alert, maintain security, and be flexible (combat mindset).
4. Evasion Movement (Chapters I and II)
• Travel slowly and deliberately. Intermittently stop, look, listen, and smell.
• Do not leave evidence of travel.
• Maintain noise and light discipline.
• Stay away from heavily trafficked areas/natural lines of drift.
• Move from one point of concealment to another point of concealment.
• Use evasion movement techniques. − Note: You are more at risk of detection during movement.
5. Recovery (Chapters III and IV)
• Select suitable area for recovery.
• Prepare for use of communications and signaling devices.
• Prepare to transmit position (distance and direction).
• Select site(s) in accordance with criteria in theater recovery plans.
• Observe/report enemy activity and hazards.
• Secure equipment.
• Stay concealed until recovery is imminent.
• Be prepared to authenticate via isolated personnel report (ISOPREP).
• During recovery: − Follow recovery force instructions. − Secure weapon. − Assume non-threatening posture. − Beware of rotors/propellers from aircraft.
