Beyond: Two Souls had no official release date beyond a vague 2013 window, and while a retailer slip-up may have hinted at an official launch date, the publisher has stepped in to put rumours to bed. Check out their response to the leak here.
Update:
Speaking with IGN – via Gamespot – a Sony rep clarified matters, “We have not announced a release date for Beyond: Two Souls outside of the 2013 time frame. In fact, [Quantic Dream founder David Cage] recently shared that the title is preparing for the alpha version so the date reported on the product site is incorrect and has since been updated.”
So there we go, commence speculation people.
Original story:
As screen grabbed by IGN, the Quantic Dream effort’s PlayStation.com page briefly displayed a May 25, 2013 release date.
The website was quickly returned to its previous state, showing the 2013 window, and Sony told the site the posting was a mistake.
“We have not announced a release date for Beyond: Two Souls outside of the 2013 time frame. In fact, David Cage recently shared that the title is preparing for the alpha version so the date reported on the product site is incorrect and has since been updated,” a representative said.
May 25 2013 is a Saturday, which is an unusual launch date for a North American release, further suggesting the whole thing was a cock up.
America. As evidenced by Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy, David Cage, founder and CEO of Quantic Dream, is creatively drawn to the good ol' US of A. He returns to America for his next game, Beyond: Two Souls, and we had to ask him: what makes America so appealing?
"I think America is a very interesting country," he told us. "It's where all current legends are built and told."
That being said, Beyond will be a much bigger game than its predecessor. "Beyond is probably more international than Heavy Rain was. Heavy Rain was set in Philadelphia, while Beyond will be set all around the world," he said. "Although it's mainly based in America, you will explore different locations. You will travel much more. It's going to be a journey in a physical sense, and an emotional sense."
When questioned about why Beyond is using a brand new engine, instead of simply reusing the one created for Heavy Rain, Cage told us that he's, simply put, insane. "We're just crazy people. We don't do this for money or fame. We want to take risks because we enjoy trying to push the envelope," he told us. "Does it make sense from a company point of view? Not really, to be honest. Being the CEO of the company, I can tell you that it's totally absurd. But we enjoy it so much. We're a team of passionate people. This is 'what we should have done,' but we've done something else."
Normand Corbeil, the composer who worked with Quantic Dream and created the Heavy Rain soundtrack has passed away at the age of 56 from Pancreatic Cancer.
Brent-4 zei:Kga deze titel toch wel in de gaten houden hoor. Heavy Rain was echt een topspel, eens totaal iets anders dan we gewend zijn.
Beyond: Two Souls writer David Cage has confirmed that Quantic Dreams’ incoming title is in beta and that a release date will be announced soon.
Speaking with IGN, Cage said just that, “Beyond is almost in beta. It will come out this year and the release date will be announced soon.”
Cage also shared his thought on rumours that PS4 will block the use of pre-owned titles, “On one hand, I understand consumer’s position. Games are expensive. When they buy something they want to be able to trade it, most of the time to buy more games. I can understand that point.
“On the other side, I understand the point of the industry. Each time you buy a used game, this is money that doesn’t go into the pocket of the people that took the risk to create this, to finance it, to develop it. This is also unfair.
“So I don’t know what is the right answer. I don’t know if making this impossible [to play used games] is the answer. Maybe it is, maybe it’s not. Maybe it’s more about explaining and about telling people who really love games that if they buy used games, there will be a day where there won’t be any new games at all.”
...Beyond: Two Souls won't play anything like Heavy Rain, Cage promises. In the cinematic adventure game, players will take control of both the supernaturally gifted Jodie — played by Ellen Page — and Aiden, the intangible entity that can travel places and behave in ways a human character can't. There are no QTEs, Cage says. Instead, Beyond will introduce new gameplay mechanics that offer similar advantages, but "play more in line with what gamers expect" from a modern action-adventure game.
Cage says that perception of Heavy Rain's QTE-heavy gameplay turned off potential players, even though Quantic Dream received "very positive feedback" about their implementation...
We can also announce today that BEYOND: Two Souls is coming to PS3 in October 2013. So we’ll have plenty of news and videos to share with you in the coming weeks and months.
Today we’re very pleased to announce that Ellen will be joined by another Oscar nominee in Willem Dafoe (Platoon, Spider-Man) who will star as Nathan Dawkins, a government scientist who works with Jodie to analyse her powers.
At a later stage we’ll have lots more to reveal on the interplay between Nathan and Jodie in the game (no spoilers today!), but suffice to say they form a compelling bond and together deliver some of the most unique and powerful scenes yet seen in gaming.
We’ve got a gameplay trailer for you today showcasing an early scene from the game in which Nathan first meets a young Jodie (played by a child actress, not Ellen), and including some sneak peeks at other scenes from the game:
Xhizor zei:Vond heavy rain een leuke ervaring, maar ook niet meer dan dat. Zie wel hoeveel ze er gaan vragen ervoor op release
Volledig mee eens!Y@nnick. zei:Het is heel persoonlijk, maar ik vond het absoluut een topspel. Echt een game waarvan je spijt hebt als je hem hebt uitgespeeld... heb ik niet vaak meer tegenwoordig.
Willem’s exciting inclusion in the cast is just the tip of the iceberg for our announcements today though, as we are also pleased to announce that BEYOND will be coming to PS3 on October 8th, 2013.
